The Robison Family
We are a family owned and operated lodge and horseback outfitting business. What sets us apart from other Yellowstone and Beartooth Mountain Outfitters is that we are young and energetic, while possessing 15+ years experience guiding and outfitting in Yellowstone and the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. We are enthusiastic about the area in which we live and thrive to share it with anyone interested in experiencing the wonders of Yellowstone National Park, and the beauty and remoteness of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness the traditional
way- by horseback. We have what it takes to provide you with a horsepack trip
of a lifetime.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO MEETING YOU!
Matt Robison – Outfitter, guide and owner
Being a 3rd generation Montanan I was raised with good values and taught how to share our hunting and fishing heritage with others. In 1995 at the age of eighteen, I started guiding, packing, and handling livestock in the Beartooth Wilderness. Drawn back to the mountains every summer I soon realized this was where I was meant to be. In 2000 an opportunity came along to purchase an existing outfitting business, so along with my dad, Pete, and Outfitter Craig Schell we started a partnership and Stillwater Outfitters. The original focus was the elk hunting camp on Wolverine Creek, unforseen by us was the impact on the elk population by the reintroduction of Grey Wolves from Canada to Northern Yellowstone. Soon we could see the dwindling numbers of elk in our area and realize it would be hard to justify taking as many hunters as we started out with. In the fall of 2003 I became a year round resident in Cooke City along with at that time my future wife, Mary. We began managing the lodge on Cooke Pass. By fall of 2004 we stopped hunting elk from the Wolverine Camp and have been focusing our efforts towards summer business. 2006 brought a change to Stillwater Outfitters as I took over as outfitter, and Mary and I became business owners of the business.
Mary Robison – Lodge manager, trip logistics, cook, housekeeper, owner
In 1996 Mary was introduced to the Cooke City area while attending college in Bozeman Montana, she also fell in love with the area and soon moved to Cooke City and found work with the National Park Service as a trails maintenance worker for six seasons. She is now managing the lodge and outfitting business with me full time. Mary's experience packing into Yellowstone backcountry with the trail crew is invaluable in running logistics for our pack trips, she's a great cook and loves to be in the backcountry.
We are very excited as our 3 year old, Addy and our 1 year old, Pete get older, including them more and more in what we do. We feel lucky to be able to raise them in this truly breathtaking environment.
Craig Schell – Guide, wrangler, cook, packer
Craig Schell has been an invaluable asset to our operations. He is an experienced outfitter himself, and guide of Yellowstone and the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. He was my original partner, lifetime mentor, and best friend, Craig helps us with day rides, and pack trips during our busiest times. He is a great cook, wrangler, packer and is the Life of any trip; sure to put a smile on everyone’s face. He is currently owner/outfitter of Double D Outfitters in Terry, Montana, offering guided mule deer and antelope in the fall.
T.J. Baroni – Guide, wrangler, packer
T.J. is a hardworking, young and energetic guide who came to work with us in 2010. He could do it all, pack, guide and put fly fishermen all in the right spots. T.J. grew up in Mississippi training horses and rodeoin’. He spent last fall guiding for the Cheff ranch in the remote Bob Marshall Wilderness guiding elk and deer hunters. He says he’s looking forward to guiding for us this summer and we’re excited to have him back!
Come along with us on one of our backcountry pack trips.
We would love to have you as our guest and would do our
best in showing you some real Montana hospitality.
From our family to yours,
Thanks and see ya soon
