Many people often wonder while on their Yellowstone vacation, "which entrance to Yellowstone National Park should I spend most of my time at?" If you are looking for:

  • LESS PEOPLE
  • INDESCRIBABLE BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAIN SETTINGS
  • TRUE MONTANA HISTORY

THEN COOKE CITY AT THE NORTHEAST ENTRANCE OF YELLOWSTONE IS THE ONE! Often, Yellowstone lodging books up fast, is over-priced, and is crowded.

Cooke City and Silver Gate, Montana are the small communities located at the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park. With roots deep in mining, Cooke City will make you feel as if you stepped back in time.

Located on Highway 212, the scenic Beartooth Highway is the access vein to the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness and the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone. Just 4 miles from Yellowstone, and only 18 miles to the prime wildlife viewing coveted within the Lamar Valley, Cooke City makes a great basecamp on your Yellowstone vacation.

The reintroduced wolves of the Druid pack continue to prosper with their offspring in the Lamar Valley and can often be spotted. Grizzly bears, black bears, antelope, moose, bison, coyotes, big horn sheep, mountain goat, foxes, and badger are among other Lamar Valley residents, some of which venture into Cooke City on occasion!!

A great way to experience the scenery and wildlife of Yellowstone is horseback. We can set you up with a day ride that explores northeast Yellowstone, or a multi-day horseback pack trip that takes you deeper into the heart of Yellowstone or the Beartooth Mountains and away from the crowds. We, at Stillwater Outfitters, truly love the area in which we outfit and want to share it with everyone!

The towns of Silver Gate and Cooke City are rich in character and are sure to give you a unique and memorable experience. Having moved here for the beauty and outdoor opportunities, I speak from my heart when I tell you that this area is the "best part of Yellowstone"!!
